Abstract

This research is motivated by two things. It was initiated by the trend of blasphemy cases in Indonesia which led to massive demonstrations from several urban muslims, from the case of Ahok, Sukmawati, Coki-Muslim. From this phenomenon, several articles appeared on online pages, one of which was from nahimunkar.com which talked about the prohibition of forgiving religious blasphemers based on the Qs. 9: 64-66. Even at a certain point these blasphemers may be sentenced to death, because their actions are considered as an infidelity. Therefore, this study seeks to reinterpret Qs. 9: 64-66 through the theory of ma'na>- cum-maghza>, an approach introduced by Sahiron Syamsuddin, that seeks to capture the significance of Qur’anic verse through two things, literal and historical macro-micro consciousness. This research is classified as a qualitative-library research which is excavated based on authentic classical-modern Islamic sources and other important additional sources. The results of this study indicate that the application of Qs. 9: 64-66 as legal jurisprudence for blasphemers is considered inappropriate, because the verse does not address this area. The verse talks about the forms of persecution and hate speech of hypocritical groups to marginalize the existence of Prophet Muhammad and his followers. As for the spirit of Qs. 9: 64- 66 is moral support for victims of bullying and a curse for perpetrators of bullying and hate speech.
