Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the role of Harun Al-Rasyid in the development of Baitul Hikmah Library during the Abbasid Dynasty. The benefit of the research was to give visualization and understanding about the role of Harun Al-Rasyid in the development of Baitul Hikmah. Hopefully by this research, the explanation about the role of Harun Al-Rasyid in the development of library can give scientific insight for readers. This research was conducted by the method of historical research with the type library research which had descriptive-analytic and includes the type of qualitative research. The data collection techniques used was documentation. The analysis of data in the research was content analysis technique that consist of four stages namely heuristic, verification, interpretation and historiography. Based on this research can be concluded in three points these are: 1) library management. Baitul Hikmah library is well managed as evidenced by the organizational structure that functions to manage the library in shelving, classification, copying and book binding and preservation. 2) the collections development. Baitul Hikmah library in collections development focused on the completeness of collection by purchasing, gifts and book translation. 3) library as science and learning centre. By this research, the researcher give the recommendation so research about development of library toward the advancement of knowledge science in the past will be researched further. So that the treasures of intellectualism in Islamic civilization related to library will be more resulted in the from of text.
