Abstract

This thesis examines halal discourse which is the privilege of religious practice which later becomes a global discourse. This thesis deals with discussing contemporary themes in the sociology and anthropology of religion regarding halal practices in the lives of modern society by taking the trend of halal tourism as a case study. Halal tourism is a "window" to discuss about what scholars call "sacralization of daily life". This thesis contributes to the special secularization discourse of the contribution of sacralization. This thesis is a qualitative descriptive study by conducting interviews and analysis of the literature related to halal tourism. This thesis shows that until now halal has transformed from consumption products to non-consumption products. This transformation was influenced by the globalization of piety and changes in the lifestyle of middle-class Muslims. Both of these things led to the process of islamization in the community's living system. The Islamization process then becomes a trading system that supports one another, thereby contributing to the development of a new dimension in halal discourse, namely halal tourism. The development of halal tourism is seen as a form of "sacralization of everyday life", where middle-class Muslims and the general public use religious norms as a consideration in life choices, for example in choosing consumption products and how they spend their leisure time. This shows that religious values increasingly live in the life system of modern society. Thus, it can be announced that the development of a market with moral values and religious values cannot be released as a form of religious values expressed by Turner.
