Abstract

ABSTRACT The Qur'an as a scripture can always be interpreted, and it is always possible to review and think of the meaning of the verses, due to its position as "tibyan Ii kulli .syai" (a reference to the interpretation of all things). Therefore, the vocabulary of the Qur'anic verses must contain many dimensions of meaning (multiple meanings). 'Ali bin Abi Talib, in this regard, stated that: "Don't ye (Ibn 'Abbas) argue with them (the followers of the Khawarij) about the meaning of the Qur'anic verses, because the Qur'an contains multiple dimensions of meaning (zu wujuh)." Different from 'Ali bin Abi Talib, Roger Trigg, a hermeneutician having ever commented on the importance of hermeneutics in the interpretation of scriptural texts in today's era, states that: "hermeneutic paradigm is an interpretation of traditional (classic) texts, where problems should always be directed, so the texts need to be understood in the present context which has very different situations." Based on the above statement, this dissertation researcher is inspired to study and examine the tura§ books of the Qur'an exegesis, with the title "tagut in the Qur'an," and to understand and interpret the word "af-lagDt" using the methodical basis built on the maudu'i methodological approach, and the hermeneutic analysis that refers to Hassan Hanafi 's sacramental hermeneutic theory. This theory formulates the interpretation of the Qur' anic texts in three forms of analysis: the historical context of the verse revelation (asbab an-nuzul), the eidetic meaning of the lexeme (linguistic analysis), and the practical meaning of the lexeme (significance analysis). This is the academic reason for this dissertation. With reference to the methods and theories mentioned above, the writer attempts to collect the verses of "ar-tc7gut" and all its derivational forms in the Qur'an, and then analyze and interpret them using the theoretical basis of sacramental hermeneutics (Tafsir al-Muqaddas) that focuses its discussion on three principal issues, i.e. how to understand the meaning of the word "at-tagiJ!" in a historical context (asbc7b an-nuzul); how to interpret its meanings in the eidetic context (linguistic analysis); and how to reconstruct its meanings in a practical analysis relevant to the present context. Of the three problems formulated, the dissertation research results in the following: 1) the meaning of the word "at-tagut" in the historical context is any form of worship of or devotion to anything besides Allah Ta'ala; 2) the meaning of "at-tagut" in the linguistic study is any violation of God (Allah)'s laws; 3) the meaning of "at-tagut" in the practical analysis is all tyrannical systems or systems of deviation of the shari'ah of Allah.
