Abstract

The problem that often occurs in adolescence is the loss of self-confidence. Especially when it comes to physical appearance. Adolescents who do not have the desired physical appearance will feel inferior. Moreover, there is an assessment from the public regarding beauty standards, where teenagers who cannot meet these beauty standards are more prone to experiencing body shaming. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between self-confidence and body shaming in adolescent girls. This research uses a correlational quantitative method. The subjects in this study were young women in Yogyakarta who were determine using the purposive sampling technique with the criteria of the subject being female, aged 17-24 years, domiciled in DI Yogyakarta, and had experienced body shaming. The data collection method used a scale of self-confidence and a scale of body shaming and then analyzed using statistical analysis of product-moment correlation. The results of this study indicate a significance value of 0.000 (p 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of -0.480. The conclusion that can be obtained in this study is that there is a negative relationship between body shaming and self-confidence in young women. The value of the effective contribution of the body shaming variable on self-confidence is 23%, of which 77% is influenced by factors outside of body shaming.
