Abstract

The power relationship between caregivers (kiai/nyai) in Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) and students (santri) has indeed been ongoing for a long time. Santri highly respect, obey, and are loyal to the caregivers, and the authority of the caregivers is accepted within the pesantren itself and by the broader community. This is referred to by Sidney Jones as a patron-client relationship. To understand the nature of the relationship between caregivers (kiai/nyai) in pesantren and santri, this study employs a qualitative approach and case study methodology, utilizing George Herbert Mead's symbolic interactionism theory and Michel Foucault's power theory. This research found that the interaction between caregivers and santri in the R2 complex is harmonious and marked by respectful behavior from the santri. Furthermore, interactions in the pesantren are based on group membership, with santri who hold managerial positions communicating more actively with caregivers compared to non-managerial santri. Additionally, there is a clear power hierarchy in the pesantren, where the caregiver (Bu Nyai) holds the highest position, santri occupy the lowest position, and in between are the managers who act as the right hand of the kiai. The power relationship between caregivers and santri at Pondok Pesantren R2 is positive, with the caregivers' authority being used to organize and educate the santri to develop good moral character (akhlakul karimah).
