Abstract
Patriarchy is a pattern formed in society where male power and strength dominate, resulting in the marginalization of women. The deviations that occur make women as objects often occur in public and private spaces. The film series “What We Lose To Love” is one of the films that illustrates the dominant attitude of a man in a relationship which results in the powerlessness of a woman in it. This research aims to analyzed the patriarchal attitude contained in the film series “What We Lose To Love” and then look at it from an Islamic persprective. This research uses qualitative research with a descriptive approach and uses Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. Barthes explains that there are two levels of signification, namely denotation which is the level of signification that refers to relity, then connotation is the level of signification that is open to various possible interpretations. In addition, Barthes also saw other meanings, namely meanings related to myths (coding social meanings and values as something that is considered natural). The results of this study show several scenes that illustrate patriarchal attitudes, including: (1) Bringing up gifts/sacrifices; (2) Controlling various aspects of the partner’s life; (3) Deciding something unilaterally; (4) Easily demeaning the partner; (5) Threatening the partner to hurt themselves; (7) Twisting facts. This resulted in the loss of Dara’s body in this film as a representation or depiction of the role of women who lost their identity because they were not strong enough or even given the opportunity to defend their rights. If concluded from the point of view of Islam, patriarchal attitudes are inversely proportional because Islam highly values and glorifies women.
