Abstract

Urban greening or urban farming is effective in addressing urban environmental issues, particularly in Yogyakarta. The Gemah Ripah Farmers Group in Bausasran Village has successfully created green open spaces and implemented urban farming through techniques such as hydroponics. This effort not only improves environmental quality and food security but also empowers the community, including the farmers' group, and enhances the well-being of residents. Thus, urban farming and greening are crucial solutions for tackling environmental challenges caused by urbanization. This research aims to explore the strategies for land use in urban areas implemented by the Gemah Ripah Farmers Group and the impact of these activities. The study is descriptive research with a qualitative case study approach. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The selection of informants used a purposive technique based on specific characteristics considered relevant, and data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and methods. The analysis process began with data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this research indicate that the Gemah Ripah Farmers Group has successfully utilized urban land in a way that has significant impacts in various aspects. Economically, they have increased the availability of local food and created new job opportunities while reducing transportation and distribution costs. Environmentally, the group has implemented sustainable farming practices, such as using organic fertilizers, which contribute to improving air and water quality. However, they face challenges related to limited land access and insufficient policy support. The positive impacts of these activities include increased member income, educational spaces for the community, and heightened environmental awareness in society. The success of this group also promotes environmentally friendly farming practices and inspires other communities to follow their example, thereby providing simultaneous economic, social, and environmental benefits.
