Abstract

WHO notes that mental health illnesses, especially depression, are very high in various countries, and in Indonesia alone there are 9,162,886 cases or 3.7% of the population in Indonesia. In response to this relatively high number, this article attempts to provide an alternative to avoid this problem with the concepts of apatheia and asceticism which in its teachings are a form of exercise or a form of mental discipline intended to increase inner calm and obtain happiness. Both teach about restraining one's desires and offer ways to improve the quality of human character, namely by controlling one's internal state well. So what is the relevance of the concepts of apatheia and zuhud happiness in mental health issues? The writing in this thesis uses qualitative research. The data obtained from this research was obtained using the library research method, namely collecting various data from library literature which refers to the themes of mental health, stoicism happiness and al-Ghazali's asceticism. In data management. In compiling this data, the researcher described mental health, the concept of stoicism happiness (apatheia) and al-Ghazali's concept of asceticism. Next, delve into the data and analyze it further and make a comparison between the concepts of apatheia and asceticism. So that the results of this comparison can be found in conclusions that can be applied to mental health problems. The results of this research show that the concept of happiness can be an alternative that avoids mental health problems. Happiness is defined by stoicism as a state where humans avoid negative emotions and asceticism from al-Ghazali who defines it as peace of mind. People who experience mental disorders are unhappy people. So it makes sense that the concept of happiness can be an alternative to avoid mental health problems.
