Abstract

This research intended to explore furthermore on the profile of lesbianism life in university students; to comprehend the process of self identity creation in lesbians university students; and also to know social response towards lesbians university students. In this research, the researcher used qualitative method by case study approach. Participative observation was the main data collection method, of which was supported by in-depth interview. This research was conducted in three lesbians university students in Yogyakarta. The existence of lesbian is an extended process, either individually or socially, in generally most of lesbians in university students of Yogyakarta, not merely come from Yogyakarta. The variety of social status, economy and culture is the life background of a lesbian. In this research it finds the existence of difference in the period of self identity creation in lesbians students from three informants in this research, wherein one of three informants have identity self creation happened during she entered adolescence, whereas the creation of self identity of other two informants in this research happened during they entered adulthood. The creation of self identity in teenage requires great change in attitude and behavioral pattern of someone. It is not all of individual can complete this step appropriately, moreover in maturity level of someone who has retardation in the matter of take the basic towards the creation of attitude and behavioral pattern. In this matter, it seems the existence of difference in maturity level of these three informants. Thus the existence of difference in behavior in comprehending and realizing on traits attached in the self of these three informants to enter the role they will have in future life. It is not all of social environment can accept someone who has sexual disorder, in particularly in religious scope. Homosexual or lesbianism are considered as violating attitude and inappropriate to religious norm in most of society. Keyword: self identity, university students, lesbians
