Abstract

In the morning on May 27 2006, an earthquake having a magnitude of Mw 6.2 shook the province of Daerah Istimeiva Yogyakarta and part of Klaten, Central Java. The epicenter which lies on the Opak Fracture, has killed over 6000 people and caused material damaged as much as 27 billion rupiahs. looking at the number of people killed in this disaster and the material damaged it caused, the earthquake happened in Yogyakarta can be catagori^ed as a very tragic disaster. Indonesia, lies in the a territory where Eurasia, Indo- Australia, Philipine and Pacific tectonic plates meet. Thus, it is natural that Indonesian territory has a very high potential for earthquake to occur. Prior to this disaster, however, there are still plenty of people who are ignorant about this fact. Although it is impossible to avoid earthquake from happening, the damaged and death toll caused by such disaster should be able to be minimali^ed. Spreading information about the potential of earthquake is one way to minimali^ed the impact of earthquake. For religious believers, earthquake as a natural phenomenon could be seen as a test. A Muslim should use the dimensions of faith (Al-ImanJ and obedience (At-TaqwaJ to deal with this phenomenon. Finally, the dimensions of faith and obedience should be taken into account in the mitigation process earthquake and other natural disasters.
