Abstract

This recent article deals with the introductory training of the treatment, the preservation and the organization of traditional Islamic schools (Pondok Pesantren)'s Islamic handscripts and literatures. Because of the introduction, this article is going to focus on the library education training by which santris, students of the Pondok Pesantren will be hopefully conscious of the importance of the library for their knowledge and civilization advancement. This introductory training invites them to recognize basic knowledge of library and to practice it in order that they are able to treat, preserve and organize the Islamic handscripts and literature of their own pesantren libraries. This respect is extremely important. This is due to the fact that not allsantris or pesantren's leaders have been aware of the existence of the library as information source and as advancement media. Given the fact, the training given for the santris of pondok pesantren al~Munawivir Krapyak-Yogyakarta is certainly a significant action. This can be seen from the fact that having followed the training they feel that they get new important knowledge, namely library knowledge that is generally not taught at the Pondok. Even, they are in the hope that the advanced similar training will also be given for the next period. This success cannot be separated from the fact that subjects given to them are extremely new and interesting The subjects are as follows: Reflection on Muslim Intellectual Tradition, Islamic Library Problems in Indonesia, Library Knowledge, Library Management, Development of Islamic Collections, Development of Islamic Handscripts, and Technique of the Treatment and the Preservation of Islamic Literature and Handscripts.
