Abstract
Multicultural education is relatively a new issue in the discourse of Islamic education. Its main objective is to help all students to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to function effectively in a pluralistic democratic society. The author argues that, as an import concept from the West, multicultural education cannot be applied without giving attention to the local context. It is necessary, therefore, to give 'local' content within the concept of multicultural education. In order to make this concept is possible to apply within Islamic education, it is necessary to give it a theological base.
