"This research aims to discover the interaction among the text, the readers, and\r\nthe responses in the reading process. The subject of this research is Eat, Pray, Love\r\nwritten by Elizabeth Gilbert while the object is the spiritual instruction issue within\r\nthe story. The main topic of the issue concerns with the main character named Liz\r\nwho actualizes some spiritual instructions in her life. The writer of this research\r\napplies a reader response theory by Wolfgang Iser about aesthetic response. It uses a\r\nphenomenology of reading which uses a phenomenological approach. In the\r\nformulation, the theory covers the interplay among the readers, the issue, and the\r\nresponses which are substantially according to the readers’ background. In terms of\r\nthe background, the writer only focuses on religious background which is considered\r\nhaving a tight relation with spirituality. Therefore, the research questions mainly want\r\nto find out the religious perspectives on the spiritual instructions in the novel and to\r\nanalyze the influence of the readers’ background on the responses. In methodology,\r\nthis research is categorized as a field research by using the interview technique to get\r\nsome data. The writer of this research decides five respondents (i.e. Muslim, Hindu,\r\nBuddhist, Catholic, and Protestant) as the readers of the novel from different\r\nreligions. The writer analyzes this research by using descriptive qualitative method.\r\nTo conclude, every respondent as the reader of the novel has a different perspective\r\non the spiritual instruction issue. Substantively, the perspectives are influenced by the\r\nreaders’ background that comes from different religions.
