This text is a collection of the Pura Pakualaman Library, Yogyakarta, with a code number of collection 0060/PP/73. This text was the teaching of Paku Alam I to his son, Suryaningrat (Pakualam II), to be passed on to his daughter (granddaughter of Paku Alam I). The teachings of Islam are very strong in Estri Piwulang manuscript. The teachings in this script, among others, are from Prophetic traditions. This made the writer -as a tradition researcher- curious to examine the traditions in this script. The issues raised were looking for and examining the validity of the traditions used as basic tenets of marriage life in Piwulang Estri, the scriptwriting background, the factors that caused the writer to take these traditions as a basis for writing, the texts related to Piwulang Estri, and the relevance of the content with the present time. This study used the historical, comparative and philological methods. To investigate the validity of tradition sanad, this study used a historically critical theory of tradition sanad. The comparative method was used in tradition matan criticism. The Philological method was used to determine the background of script writing, script writing causes, the reasons why the writer took these traditions, the related texts and the relevance of the content the text today. To find texts related to Piwulang Estri, an inter textual approach was used and to find meaning/message contained in the text, an inter semiotic approach was used. From the research, there were 12 traditions about the rules of marriage used for the bases of the writing of Piwulang Estri, with 21 different sanads. Of the 21 sanads, seven were dha?if traditions, 3 were hasan and 11 were sahih. In terms of matan, there were three matans from dha?if sanad and nine were sahih traditions of Maqbul sanad. The underlying writing of Piwulang Estri was the political situation at that time in which it was not allowed to teach in person, in addition to the interest of the Paku Alam I in literature and culture of macapat as a means of teaching. The author of Piwulang Estri took these traditions as the bases for writing, because he wanted to explain the prominent behaviors for women based on Islam, so that those who applied the teachings would be the noble women or wanitatama or mar'ah salihah. There were at least 4 texts associated with Piwulang Estri, namely, Ihya? ?Ulum al-Din by al-Gazali (as a tradition reference), Suluk Sujinah, Suluk Kuthagedhe and Piwulang Estri by Paku Alam V. The dominance of men over women was evident in the tradition interpretation in Piwulang Estri. In order to make the teaching objectives (the noble women) relevant with the present age, there must be a re-interpretation of the traditions by positioning men and women in equality.
