description: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Information Retrieval  System at the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) in Library of Social  Faculty of Yogyakarta State University by base of approach the subject and author  searches in the advanced search facility. This study was an experimental study  using a quantitative research methods with the subject is the OPAC and the object  is to measure the effectiveness of information retrieval systems. Instrument in this  study using a checklist Instrument that contained query list. Its population was  based from collection tittles number in the database by using sampling with  purposive sampling technique which based on the curriculum and syllabus of each  study program. This study was conducted to data capture techniques by using  observation, documentation, interviews and tests. In this study, the formula which  used to assess the effectiveness of information retrieval systems was the precision  level formula. The result of research indicates that the average of precision level,  with subject approach, obtained values 0,82 and author approach obtained values  0,91. Based on these results, it can be said that a information retrieval system to  approach the subject and author at the OPAC in Library of Social Faculty of  Yogyakarta State University, has high precision level, or in other words has been  effective, based on precision level in the interval range (0,67=1,00).
