The process of persuasive communication in character building is influenced by how an individual gives meaning to the persuasive messages. It determines whether or not an individual will influenced by the messages. Elaboration Likelihood Theory explains two kinds of route in giving meaning to the persuasive messages. The first route is called central route where an individual gives meaning critically. While the second route is called peripheral route where an individual gives meaning less critically. Based on Elaboration Likelihood Theory, there are some factors that determine the tendency of an individual in giving meaning to the persuasive messages: motivation for elaboration, ability for elaboration, and type of elaboration. The researcher found that the members of ROHIS (Islamic Student Organization) in SMA Negeri 1 Yogyakarta tend to seriously respon the persuasive messages that is given to them by the organization through some activities. It means that they use the central route. The school can improve and maximize the process of the character building in ROHIS, in order to be more effective.
