abstract: This study focuses on the myth of Roro Mendut and Pranacitra in Kajor
Wetan Hamlet Selopamioro Village Imogiri Sub-District Bantul Regency, Special
Territory of Yogyakarta. Implementing Mircea Eliade’s myth theory, the study
concludes: first the influence of Roro Mendut and Pranacitra myth on social
cultural life is increasing social interaction, determining types of art, offerings
and role division in the ritual. Second, the function of Roro Mendut and
Pranacitra myth is to prevent the infiltration of foreign cultures in Kajor Wetan
Hamlet. Furthermore, the characters in this myth are believed to be God’s
messengers so that, they remind the participants of Wilujengan and Panyuwunan
traditions to God and draw the attention of local community and visitors in the
modern age to join the traditions. Therefore, Roro Mendut and Pranacitra
myth are included to preserve Wilujengan and Panyuwunan traditions.
