Yogyakarta was chosen to be the research site based on consideration of the quite rapidly development of BMT in this region and its interesting and diverse characteristics in terms of the problems faced; therefore, it was possible to obtain data required in accordance with the issues raised in this study. Facts on the ground indicated that some BMTs were growing rapidly and continued to expand their business, while some others were threatened to be in bankruptcy. This condition could lead to threaten the sustainability and development of Islamic microfinance institutions in the long term. The problems in this study emphasized the constraints in the management of BMT. These constraints could be divided into internal and external constraints. The internal and external issues included institutions? performance which was not maximized, the human resource capacity that had not been professional, financial performance that had not been good, weak capitalization, limited infrastructures, ineffective regulation, and supervision which was not maximized. Models built through this study showed that the variables making up the external factors, namely regulation, supervision, and infrastructure, proved to be positively significant to affect sustainability of BMT, while for the internal factors, only two of the five variables studied (human resources, management, capital, market range, and product innovation) were significantly and positively affecting the sustainability of BMT, namely human resources and capital. The findings in this study were that the aspects of determined external and internal factors that had an influence on the sustainability of BMT were the aspect of regulation, supervision, infrastructure, human resources, and capital. These aspects can be used as a guide to improving the performance of BMT towards sustainability of Islamic microfinance institutions through the acceleration of independent regulations of BMT, optimizing the role and function of the supervision of the Sharia Supervisory Board (DPS) of BMT, developing BMT institutional infrastructure, increasing the capacity of BMT human resources managers, and strengthening BMT capital resources. Further results of this study can be utilized to design the necessary policies, to encourage the development of BMT, so that sustainability of BMT can be widespread and reach as well as empower micro businesses.
