N2  - This research aims at analyzing the causes and effects of loneliness of the old characters in the short story. This research applies psychological approach together with theories of loneliness by some scientist and uses descriptive analysis method. The result of this research is that the old characters experienced difference kinds of loneliness. The old man experienced emotional loneliness whilst the older waiter felt social loneliness. Emotional loneliness which was experienced by the old man led him to suicidal feelings and actions. It happened to him when he committed to suicide by hanging himself with a rope. Social loneliness which was experienced by the older waiter led him to activity seeking which enables him to contact with others. It happened to him when he did not want to close the caf� because he looked for other customers to be served and to contact with so that he could reduce his feeling of loneliness.
