"This book is a collection of my writing, published originally in The\r\nJakarta Post between 2006 and 2016 in response to various news\r\ndeveloping in the media covering the themes of religion, politics,\r\nand society in Indonesia. Each short essay responded to a specific\r\nissue that was hotly debated across various media in Indonesia. The\r\nwriting of columns, or op-ed articles, for publication in newspapers\r\nhas a long history in Indonesia. My work is neither alone nor the\r\nfirst, but rather is part of a longstanding tradition. Let me explain\r\nthis briefly. The writing and publication of columns offering scholarly\r\nperspectives pertinent to particular events or tragedies has been\r\na tradition among Indonesian intellectuals since the late colonial\r\nperiod, when nationalist and religious leaders published their views\r\nand opinions in magazines and newspapers.1 In this vein, they tried to participate in directing the flow of information and shaping public\r\nawareness. Publication was one means by which they channeled\r\ntheir collective dream of establishing an independent nation.\r\nSukarno is a case in point. He was active in writing on various\r\ntopics relevant to Indonesian society in the late colonial period. His\r\nwork was later compiled in the book entitled Di Bawah Bendera\r\nRevolusi (Under the Banner of Revolution) which was later banned\r\nby Soeharto during the New Order.2 The book was reprinted after\r\nthe regime collapsed, as Indonesian society welcomed freedom\r\nof speech and democracy. Further, the famous debate between\r\nSukarno and Natsir over the relationship between religion and the\r\nstate, which culminated in the adoption of Pancasila as the state\r\nideology, provides clues about the vital role the media played in\r\nnurturing public opinion and shaping nationalist awareness"^^ .
