Hum %T THE REPRESENTATION OF BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS AS SEEN IN CHAPPIE’S MOVIE %X Chappie movie which is directed by Neil Bloomkamp (2015) is American science fiction movie. Chappie as main character is a robot man who represents inferiority as black skin in Johannesburg, South Africa. The lower condition of Chappie makes him wants to get his own freedom and he is not controlled by others. Thus, the researcher decides to observe the representation of a robot man by concerning in otherness and inferiority. The aim of the research is; to understand Chappie‘s representation of otherness and inferiority. Furthermore, to answer the problem statement, the researcher uses the theory of representation by using constructionist approach of Stuart Hall. Meanwhile, the researcher uses qualitative description methods as the research method. The method involves data as an observation that uses representation theory. By using the method, the researcher gets the answer of the problem statements which are; there are two constructed meanings why Chappie is represented as otherness and inferiority. The first constructed meaning is that Chappie includes Black Consciousness in South Africa who struggles for having the freedom of race. The second constructed meaning is that even he is a robot, Chappie is independent. In addition, the researcher concludes that there are four binaries in Chappie‘s movie. First is superiority and inferiority. Second is self and other. Third is stereotyping and stereotyped.
