"The tittle of this graduating paper is The Journey of Desmond Doss in\r\nHacksaw Ridge. The writer choses to discuss the hero’s journey of Desmond Doss\r\nin the film because the character is portrayed in different depiction since he is\r\npresented as a conscientious objector who joins the army, a little army medic who\r\ndoesn’t want to kill and refuse to carry any kind of weapons in the battlefield to\r\nprotect himself. He is also an unsophisticated, uneducated, and unskilled one. The\r\nwriter choses Hacksaw Ridge film because this film tries to reconstruct the\r\nmeaning of hero and war through the story and character of Desmond Doss.\r\nBesides, Hacksaw Ridge film can be considered as one of the successful war films\r\nfor its achievement in some awards and positive critical responses from the film\r\ncritics, and film magazines. They are called this film as a masterpiece, brilliant,\r\nfantastic and also considered as the best war film since Saving Private Ryan\r\n(1998) The method of this research is qualitative method which is conducted with\r\ndescriptive analysis. The objective of this research is to analyze and explain the\r\nstages passed by Desmond Doss character in his journey to be a hero in Hacksaw\r\nRidge film. The theory used in this research is hero’s journey theory proposed by\r\nJoseph Campbell and supported by film theory since the subject is a film.\r\nAccording to Campbell there are three stages of the hero’s journey they are\r\nDeparture, Initiation, and Return. From the analysis, it can be found that in his\r\njourney, Desmond Doss only passed the stage of departure and initiation while the\r\nstage of return cannot be found. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the journey\r\nof Desmond Doss fit the pattern of hero’s journey by Joseph Campbell and finally\r\nDesmond can be declared as the hero of this film. This research also proves that\r\nhero’s journey is still relevant and can be applied in any kind of stories or films, Judul skripsi ini adalah The Journey of Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge.\r\nPenulis memilih untuk membahas perjalanan menjadi seorang pahlawan yang\r\ndilakukan oleh karakter Desmond Doss dalam film Hacksaw Ridge karena\r\npenggambaran yang berbeda dari karakter Desmond Doss yaitu dia digambarkan\r\nsebagai seorang penentang perang yang memutuskan menjadi seorang tantara,\r\nseorang tantara medis yang kurus, tidak mau membunuh, dan menolak membawa\r\nsegala macam senjata untuk melindungi dirinya di medan perang. Dia juga\r\nseorang yang sederhana, tidak berpendidikan, dan tidak terlatih. Penulis memeilih\r\nfilm Hacksaw Ridge karena film ini mencoba untuk merekonstruksi makna\r\npahlawan dan perang melalui cerita dan karater Desmond Doss. Selain itu, Film\r\nHacksaw Ridge bisa dianggap sebagai salah satu film perang yang sukses atas\r\npencapainnya dalam beberapa pengahargaan dan respon positif dari kritikus dan\r\nmajalah film. Mereka menyebut bahwa Hacksaw Ridge adalah sebuah maha karya\r\nbrilian, luar biasa dan juga dianggap sebagai salah satu film perang terbaik sejak\r\nSaving Private Ryan (1998). Metode penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif\r\ndengan menerapkan analisis deskriptif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk\r\nmenganalisa dan menjelaskan tahap-tahap yang dilalui oleh Desmond Doss dalam\r\nperjalanannya menjadi seorang pahlwan dalam film Hacksaw Ridge. Teori yang\r\ndigunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori hero’s journey yang dikemukakan\r\noleh Joseph Campbell dan didukung oleh teori film karena subjeknya adalah film.\r\nMenurut Campbell, ada tiga tahap dalam perjalanan seorang pahlawan yaitu\r\nDeparture, Initiation, dan Return. Dari analisis ini, bisa ditemukan bahwa dalam\r\nperjalananya Desmond Doss hanya melewati tahap departure dan initiation\r\nsedangkan tahap return tidak bisa ditemukan. Meski demikian, bisa disimpulkan\r\nbahwa perjalanan Desmond Doss sesuai dengan pola perjalanan hero oleh Joseph\r\nCampbell dan akhirnya Desmond Doss bisa dikatakan sebagai hero dalam film\r\nini.
