%X In everyday, people use Language for communication. By communication, people can convey ideas, messages or their opinions. To convey ideas, messages, and opinions, it is needed phrases, sentences or utterances clearly so that the hearer (reader) can understand. It happens not only in daily life, but also in the dialogue or conversation of a film. This research aims to examine the types and functions of speech acts of the main characters in the dialogue or conversation of Tears of the Sun movie based on the theory of Yule and Searle. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. In data collection, this research uses documentation method. This research finds speech act functions used by Waters, namely representative, directive, commissive, declarative, and expressive. The main character uses direct and indirect type of speech acts.
