"This paper employs an integrated-interconnected perspective to\r\nexamine Sufi groups and theirroles in developing Islamic teachings\r\nand performing social functions. Known as communities primarily\r\ncharacterized by their esoteric religious interpretation and Teacher-\r\nStudent structured relationship, Sufi groups can be approached\r\nthrough analyzing their religious doctrines as well as their social\r\npractice. Combining these two analytical approaches, this paper\r\nargues that the dynamics of Sufi groups rests up on three factors.\r\nFirstly, the development of Sufi doctrines into ritual practices serves\r\ntoproduce and strengthen particular patterns of social solidarity\r\namong the followers. Secondly, the participation of Sufi groups in\r\nthe life of plural societal relations may take form in a distinct social\r\nmovement, particularly when they are involved in the so-called\r\npublic spiritual and morality enforcement.Thirdly, Sufi groups can\r\nbe classified into three groups: pragmatic-inclusive, fundamentalistexclusive,\r\norpragmatic-fundamentalist."^^ .
