Many parties easily access and distribute information among their users freely. However, the use of social media today has not been accompanied by the awareness of each user to think critically. In the meantime, social media comes in variety of platforms with their respective characteristics. Instagram is one of the most extensively used social media platforms for spreading and obtaining information. As yet, most Instagram users come from the age of 18- 24 years and prominence as a student. This shows that students who utilize Instagram frequently, could simply be exposed to plentiful flow of information from various digital sources. In order to face the problem mentioned above, competency of must be introduced in each students who actively utilize Instagram. Therefore, this study was conducted to describe the digital literacy competencies held by students of Communication Sciences at University of Islam Indonesia Yogyakarta as active users of Instagram reviewed based on internet searching, hypertext navigation, content evaluation, and knowledge assembly by using digital literacy theory owned by Paul Gilster (1997). This research uses descriptive qualitative study method. Subjects in this study were determined by using purposive sampling technique. Subject Criteria in this research is an active student of Communication Studies at University of Islam Indonesia Yogyakarta and Instagram users actively determined through the duration of accessing Instagram more than 3 hours per day.
