The presence of Gontor educational institutions as a place to form character education as a basic for every student to navigate his life in society. KH Imam Zarkasyi as the founder of the Gontor Islamic boarding school, has laid the foundation for character education as a spirit in life in the Gontor boarding school which aims to learn early more about the character education. The research method used Library Research. This type of research is qualitative research. Data analysis uses content analysis method which is a content analysis that focuses on the interpretation of a work such as trying to offer epistimological assumptions on understanding that not only deals with text analysis but also emphasizes the context. The study of KH Zarkasyi's thoughts on character education has instilled character values in the life of the santri through the practice, guidance and paragon from the Kiai or the cottage family. The character values are stated in the Motto and Panca Jiwa Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. Kulliyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyyah as a school system that applies 100\% exacta knowledge and 100\% religious knowledge. The study found that KH Imam Zarkasyi's thoughts have comprehensive, coherent and progressive characteristics. His thinking about character education was born from his ability to respond to the socio-historical and ideological developments that surround him, as well as the idealization of the educational practices he experienced.} }
