abstract: Virtual identity is an identity that’s made by somebody in cyberspace. The
through of application “WhatsApp”, everyone can play identity and represents it
according to the desired role. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out
how the representation of the KOPMA board's virtual identity in describing the
virtual identity of the WhatsApp group. The methodology used in this study is a
qualitative method with a Netnography study approach. Data collection is done
with document data taken from conversation activities in the WhatsApp group and
interviews are then analyzed using representation theory and backstage and
frontstage identity theory.
The results of this research state that KOPMA management representing ego
identity as a result conversation activities of WhatsApp group. This representation
of ego identity is influenced by the communication patterns carried out by the
management in the WhatsApp group. This is based on the analysis of researcher
who discovered the existence of defensive communication patterns, empathic
communication, egocentric communication and formal and informal
communication in the WhatsApp group. The last but not less, there are also
differences in online and offline identity of KOPMA management. Although there
are also those who do not show differences in identity.
