"Current global Islamic discourse cannot be separated from\r\nthe movements of Salafism and Shi'ism. Both ideologies\r\nspread to Indonesia as a result of the competition between\r\nSaudi Arabia and Iran which emerged after the 1979 Iranian\r\nrevolution and culminated in the aftermath of the Arab\r\nrevolution movement, known as The Arab Spring in 2011.\r\nThey also experienced a rapid increase in Indonesia through\r\ntheir respective actors and the development of their\r\ninstitutional network.\r\nThis dissertation aims to describe the development of\r\nglobal Salafism and Shi'ism, explain the role of Salafi and Shia\r\nideologies in constructing Islamic understanding in Indonesia,\r\nexplain the strategies and institutional networks of LIPIA and\r\nSTFI Sadra, and analyze the extent of transnationalization of\r\nthese two ideologies and movements in Indonesia.\r\nThis study uses a transnational Islamic approach of Peter\r\nMandaville with a pattern of comparing Salafi and Shia\r\nexpansion through educational institutions. The literature data\r\nare carried out by collecting books, journals, research reports,\r\nand other information that has a relationship with the two\r\nideologies, while field data collection is done by observation,\r\ndocumentation, and interviews.\r\nThe results of the study show that Saudi Arabia and Iran\r\nmake educational and da'wah institutions as a means of\r\ndiplomacy to support their political interests. Geo-politics and\r\ngeo-strategy played by Saudi Arabia and Iran in the context of\r\nconflict of interest is more directed to the creation of state of\r\nmind than the physical struggle for territory. Salafism is able to\r\ncreate new Islamic discourses in Indonesia through the \"new\r\nmovement of political Salafism\" while Shi'ism emphasizes\r\nmore on strengthening tasawwuf ‘irfannazhāri rather than the\r\ntheological or fiqh forms. The thought of Shia’s tasawwuf\r\n‘irfannazhāricannot be separated from the concept of the\r\nImam’skema'shūman. SalafiDa'wah is carried out in a blatant\r\nmanner because it is considered to have similarities with the\r\nmajority of Sunni Muslims in Indonesia while Shiada'wah is\r\ncarried out with taqiyah through a strategy of hiding its Syrian\r\nidentity and adaptation strategies."^^ .
