In this study, in particular the representation of literacy practices in the film will be seen from the concept of literacy according to Kuder & Hasit (2002: 11) is the process of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and argued. This study included library research (library research) that uses data such as movie scene Kartini. This study uses a semiotic approach. Data collected to watch, record, and take a screenshot images and dialogue from the film. The method used to process data semiotics by Charles Sanders Peirce. Through this research, be concluded that the practice of literacy shown in the film Kartini fulfills the criteria of the definition of literacy that is the process of reading, writing, speaking and speech. The level of literacy practices by the main character when childhood on a performative level or limited to reading, writing, and using language symbols (letters). Until adulthood is at the level where the epistemic able to pour knowledge into the paper. The findings of researchers outside the theoretical basis is the practice of getting other people to read books, practice taught to read and write letters, and personal library as a place to store books resources reading.
