        abstract = {Every year UIN Sunan Kalijaga receives thousands of
students from various regions, including foreign students from
Patani, Thailand. Their existence will certainly form a social
interaction, especially intercultural communication. Intercultural
communication occurs when members from one particular culture
give messages to members of other cultures. Not infrequently,
inter-cultural communication experiences several obstacles or
noise that cause discomfort.This study aims to determine the
obstacles and communication success factors of Patani students in
academic activities at Sunan Kalijaga UIN.
This study used descriptive qualitative method. Analysis
of the data used is an interactive analysis of Miles and
Hubberman. Data collection techniques used interviews with 8
research subjects to find obstacles and communication success
factors in the academic activities of Sunan Kalijaga UIN.
` The results of this study found that Patani students
experienced communication barriers in language, culture,
perception, and motivation. While the communication success
factors cover two aspects, namely personal factors and situational
factors. Both of them worked and helped Patani students to be
able to go through the academic process well.}
