In the poem, it tells the story of the suffering and sorrow so deeply felt by the victims of rebellion or war. The suffering and sadness of the victims was caused by the rebels who destroyed their country and brutally killed innocent civilians. This study uses Charles Morris's semiotic theory in discovering the meaning of al-masā’ and the unity of the poetic meaning of Żātu Masā’ by Nāzik al-Malā`ikah. Using Morris's theory based on three aspects of language, the poem Żātu Masā’ will be analyzed through three stages, namely the syntactic aspects, the semantic aspects, and the pragmatic aspects. This research method uses descriptive analysis method by studying library research. The results of this study indicate that al-masā’ which is the title of this poem is a parable of a war or rebellion. This is because war or rebellion is like a world that will end for the victims of war or rebellion because there is no hope for life. A war or rebellion is likened to darkness which casts hatred on each other. Suffering, misery, hatred, and sadness mixed together make the atmosphere even more tense. Bombings everywhere, the dropping of missiles that were just like that, and also a barrage of bullets that shot indefinitely in direction was a form of torture and atrocities committed by the rebels. This is a picture of a war or rebellion that is likened to evening or al-masā’ in this poem. %K Żātu Masā’, semiotic Morris, syntactic, semantics, pragmatics, Nāzik al-Malā`ikah. %D 2019 %I UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA %L digilib36951
