Not a part from it is the Qur'anic Commentary by Kiai Sa'id bin Armia. This study attempts to analyze the method of Kiai Sa'id's Qur'anic interpretation through its discussion of the syahadat in the book of Ta'lim al-Mubtadiin fi Aqaid al-Din. There, Kiai Sa'id explained that the essence of the syahadat is not in the pronun of the pronunciation but in the extent to which someone understands the intent and practice it directly. Kiai Sa'id criticized many scholars in his time who reduced the syahadat only as a lip ritual. Interestingly, in constructing his views, Kiai Sa?id often involved Qur'anic verses. Simultaneously, the language used by Kiai Sa?id in writing his interpretation was not Indonesian, nor Arabic, but a blend of Javanese and Arabic. Thus, because of these two things the writer is interested in studying how the rules of interpretation of the Kiai Sa?id bin Armia's syahadat through the approach of Gadamer's affective history. What historical factors influenced Kiai Sa'id's interpretation and how the contestation was related to the interpretation of the syahadat that occurred at that time. This study found that the method of interpretation or the Qur'anic hermeneutic of the Kiai Sa'id was a fragment of the Qur'anic verses used to respond to the polemic at the time and he positioned the methodology of his interpretation of bi ra'yi (theological reflection). The theology of the Ahl Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah which he initiated until now is still used among Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).
