abstract: Minangkabau has many traditional culture that still exist until now, one of them is “Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah” as a way and view of life. The aim of this study was to find out about strategy of Ninik Mamak in preserving the value of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" in Nagari Pariangan. The study conducted in the scope of Kerapatan Adat Nagari (KAN) Pariangan, Tanah Datar, West Sumatera, with the object of this study is communication of Ninik Mamak in preserving the value of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" and Ninik Mamak at Nagari Pariangan as subject. The approach of this study was quanlitative, and the submited technique of data was by interview. The results of the study show that strategy of Ninik Mamak in preserving the value of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" in Nagari Pariangan was significant. Ninik Mamak has many meaningful both of moral and material. After being examined through socio-cultural communication, Ninik Mamak's communication in preserving Minangkabau tradition and culture in Nagari Pariangan was quite effective by providing several programs or assistance in preserving traditional and cultural values. Efforts to preserve tradition and culture by ninik mamak such as Babaliak ka Surau, Indigenous Schools and preservation of historical heritage. Communication strategies and patterns carried out by Ninik Mamak with some related elements such as the nagari government, fellow Ninik Mamak, nephew, and other was describe that they while maintaining and preserving the Minangkabau Tradition and Culture, especially about value of “Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah”.
