%X This study motivated by the interest of researchers in the leadership strategy of KH. Nawawi Abdul Aziz who memorized the Qur’an and was able to form Aswaja character to the students. This study aimed to determine the leadership strategy of Kiai in forming the Aswaja character, why the strategy was carried out, and impact on the students. This study used a qualitative method and data collection in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation through field research. The sampling technique used in this study was the purposive sampling. Data analysis methods in this study was the data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions.  The results showed that (1) KH. Nawawi Abdul Aziz’s leadership strategy in shaping Aswaja character to the students at An Nur Ngrukem boarding school, namely istiqamah in worship, including daily practices, then organizing education with Sunni yellow books (ahlussunnah wal jamaah), writing ‘alaikum bissawadil ‘adham books for religious learning activities for students. In addition, every chance KH. Nawawi recounted the role of Kiai in Islamic boarding school when defending Indonesia’s homeland and set an example and apply worship practices such as praying on time, reading simtud duror, reading prayer, dhikr tahlil, and grave pilgrimage. (2) The leadership strategy was applied to give an examples, moderate Islamic understanding, foster a sense of tolerance, patriotism, and religious. (3) The impact of Aswaja character includes the impact of behavioral change that is having an akhlakul karimah, proportional, tabarru' with others, and have a tolerance attitude among Muslims and children of different nationalities or beliefs. Then the impact of religious thought is to have a moderate Islamic mindset in the middle of society and fortify oneself from radical and fundamental understandings, while the positive and negative impacts namely the impact of Kiai Nawawi’s istiqamah for students who have sensitivity will be able to follow and the negative impact for students is that not all students have the same awareness and sensitivity to follow the behavior directly.
