abstract: Kacapiring (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis) is one of the medicine plants
that can cure various diseases. Parts of the plants used as medicine are roots,
fruit, leaves, and flowers. Its leaves are utilized as a medicine for fever,
shortness of breath, high blood pressure, and sprue. However, the study about
the exploration and the potential usefulness of the plant is rarely conducted.
The research aims to investigate the potency of gardenia leaves methanol
extract as an antioxidant and sunscreen. 
The extraction of the leaves powder was performed by the maceration
method using methanol as a solvent. The phytochemical test was conducted to
identify the chemical compounds contained in gardenia leaves. Antioxidant
activity was tested by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method with
ascorbate (vitamin C) as a comparison compound. The sunscreen activity test
was quantitative analysis using UV-Visible spectrophotometry.  
The results show that the methanol extract of gardenia leaves
contained alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols and tannins, steroids, and saponins in
the phytochemical test. The antioxidant activity test provided methanol extract
has a strong activity with 43,24 of IC
 value. The sunscreen activity indicates
that the methanol extract has potential usage as an active ingredient of
sunscreen protection. However it has a concentrated concentration, so it is
dangerous for the skin and can cause skin irritation.
