%X There are two special moments which are often celebrated in human life,
named birth and death. In Indonesian archipelago, the celebration of these two
moments is known as the slametan, although in some areas it has a special
designation. This thesis focuses specifically on the death slametan tradition. There
are several previous studies that also raise the slametan tradition of death more
focused on the Javanese Islamic tradition, both from the perspective of history and
fiqh. This thesis is different from previous studies, the author focuses on the death
slametan in Javanese Islamic and Javanese Christian traditions which encountering
religious communities.
The death slametan tradition is one of the cultural constructs that are carried
out operatively in the life of the general public and religion when their family
members are dying. But in general, publican and religious communities carry out
the slametan of death with an awareness that it is God who creates life, so that
humans who are given the opportunity to enjoy life should give Him thanks. By
using a qualitative approach, which is based on the theory of acculturation of culture
and religion, this study aims to explain the root of the development of the death
slametan tradition, and to describe how this death slametan tradition takes place
and is understood by the community, and maps the community's efforts in facing
obstacles and challenges in implementing the practice. In this study I used the
Appreciative Inquiry method to analyze the field data through participatory
observation and in-depth interviews with Muslim and Christian communities in the
Inkopad, Bogor.
The important finding of this research is that the death slametan tradition is
capable of being a place of encounter that presents interreligious dialogue which
upholds the noble values of harmony and kinship to achieve harmonious relations
between humans and God, humans and others, and humans with God's creation.
The death slametan tradition is able to open up spaces for multiethnic and
multireligious community encounters by dismantling the barriers of differences and
framing them in a harmonious interfaith dialogue.
