abstract: This research has something as a purpose to identify the factors that cause damage
and forms of damage to the Javanese manuscript collection and describe the
preservation of Javanese manuscripts in the Litera Cendekia Library of Balai
Bahasa DIY. This research is a type of natural observation research. Methods of
data collection using observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The
data analysis process used in this study was Miles and Huberman, namely data
reduction, data presentation, and verification. In testing the validity of researchers
using the credibility test, namely by triangulation. The research of this study
concluded that the causes of damage to Javanese manuscripts in the Litera
Cendekia Library of Balai Bahasa DIY include physical factors caused by dust,
chemical factors caused by oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, biotic factors
caused by insects, besides that there are also other factors that caused by humans
and the occurrence of natural disasters, then the form of damage suffered by
Javanese manuscripts in the Litera Cendekia Library of Balai Bahasa DIY,
including the paper has brownish stains, the paper also changes color, experiences
brittleness, holes, besides that the binding is loose and some paper comes out of
the binding. The activities carried out by the Litera Cendekia Library of Balai
Bahasa DIY in preserving Javanese script manuscripts include three actions,
namely first preventive action (prevention) through camphorization activities,
cover manuscripts (cover box), regulation of temperature and humidity, second
curative action (handling) by means of fumigation, change of letters, and manual
cleaning, the third is restorative action (repair) through digitization or media
transfer activities.
