abstract: The scholars have different views on the background to the use of
the niqāb, both those who say the niqāb is a reflection of devotion to
religion and those who say it is a culture. However, based on the reality
of the use of the niqāb in Yemen, women in Yemen do not only use the
niqāb on the basis of adherence to religion and culture alone, but there
are other implications behind both. In addition, the researchers found that
Yemeni women differ in the level of freedom in the use of the niqāb,
these differences are caused by differences in social class. This research
discusses how the Yemeni women's social class is formed based on the
use of the niqāb. Apart from these problems, it also discusses the position
of the niqāb as an identity that describes the adherence of Yemeni
Muslim women to their religion and how the behavior patterns that
distinguish women using the niqāb which tend to be obedient to those
that tend to other reasons.
This research uses Social Stratification Theory and Henri Tajfel's
Social Identity Theory. The method used is a qualitative method, which
is carried out in three stages. First, the data categorization stage. Second,
analysis of the data obtained and categorized in order to answer the
predetermined problem formulations. Third, the stage of drawing
conclusions from the data that has been analyzed to provide answers to
each of the problems raised.
This study resulted in the social class of Yemeni women based on
the use of the niqāb into 3 social classes, which from one class to another
have different characteristics regarding the use of niqāb. The position of
using the niqāb as an identity that represents the adherence of Yemeni
Muslim women to their religion is still very strong as an identity of
obedience. This is evidenced by the connotative meaning obtained by
researchers based on obedience, in which there are 5 Yemeni women out
of 16 women, stating that their use of niqāb is purely on the basis of
religious adherence. In addition, it succeeded in explaining the point of
difference in the behavior patterns and characteristics of Yemeni women
using niqāb on the basis of obedience to women using niqāb on other
grounds. This refers to several aspects, namely consistency in the use of
the niqāb, personal awareness or not, challenges faced, and several other
aspects.
