"This study discusses the history of the authority of the kitab al-\r\nKāfī in the canonization frame. The authority of a religious text is not\r\nformed instantly, but there are factors behind it, like the kitab al-Kāfī,\r\nwhich is the best book of hadith among the kutub al-arba'ah in the\r\nShia community. These factors involve many parties and run for a long\r\ntime.\r\nThis canonization study is a literature study using a qualitative\r\nhistoric approach. To see the process of canonizing the authority of\r\nkitab Al-Kāfī, this study uses Keith Ward's theory about the\r\nperiodization of the development of religious scriptures in the world.\r\nThe study reached three conclusions. First, lacking hadith literatures\r\nin the fourth century, Shia published a book Al-Kāfī from which high\r\nauthority was gained for the book was badly needed by its people.\r\nBesides, the intense introduction of it by Shia clerics, in particular\r\nthose from Akhbāriah sect, made hadiths of Al-Kāfī sacred. The\r\nposition of Kulaini as marja’ taqlid and the perfection of its writing\r\nsystematic strengthened its authority. Imam al-Mahdi through his\r\nmessenger acknowledged and said that the book had sufficiently met\r\nShia people’s need. Second, there was a support for canonization from\r\nthe sovereigns – the Buwaihiah during mutaqaddimīn era, the\r\nṢafawiah during mutaakhkhirīn era and the mu’asirīn from the\r\nRepublic of Iran Shia were among others. Third, the validity of Al-\r\nKāfī was closely related to Uṣūliah clerics’ polemic and criticism that\r\ncame to a conclusion that some hadiths in the book were not valid. The\r\ndiscourse eventually boosted books of hadiths in Shia community.\r\nFrom the study of the canonization of the Al-Kāfī book, the\r\nauthor gets an conclusion that the discourse on the development of the\r\nauthority of religious books cannot be separated from the role of\r\nscholars and rulers. Because there is a role for scholars and rulers, it\r\ncannot be separated from the political element and the opportunity for\r\nfalsification authority of the truth of a text is opened."^^ .
