In quality, their alumni can compete in favorite junior high schools in Kebumen Regency. Planting religious character is a priority in these schools even though both schools have a very prominent different ways of doing it. SDI Ulil Albab is based on the teachings of Nahdlah al-?Ulama?, while SDIT Imam Syafi'i is based on Salafi manhaj. This research is done regarding things on the type of philosophy of establishing both schools, the process of character education in both schools, and the similarities and differences in character education in both schools. This qualitative research uses participatory observation, indepth interviews, and documentation as data collection in which the data are then analyzed with a qualitative analysis. Data triangulation is also employed to support the accuracy of research results. The results show that the character education in SDI Ulil Albab uses a cultural approach by applying good character directly in daily life by all school members (principals, teachers, employees, students). The principal gives a model to shape the character of students. Teachers and employees carry out what the principal has outlined as well as being a figure for students. Students follow the example of principals, teachers, and employees. Character education at SDIT Imam Syafi'i uses a contextual approach; character education is the spirit of all subjects. Character education is the main task of Islamic education and civic education teachers, and is supported by all subject teachers by linking all subject matters to form student character. The similarity between these two schools is to develop religious characters while the difference is in religious ideology. SDI Ulil Albab uses the ideology of ahl al-sunnah wa al-jama'ah annahdliyah based on historical understanding of Islam while SDIT Imam Shafi'i uses the ideology of ahl al-sunnah wa al-jama'ah alsalafy on understanding normative Islam. The role of parents in SDI Ulil Albab is in terms of mentoring children's activities at home. SDIT Imam Shafi'i parents intensively support children's religious activities. SDI Ulil Albab uses five integrated curricula in learning activities, while SDIT Imam Shafi'i only uses three curricula in its learning activities. SDI Ulil Albab involves the community in character education in school activities and is involved in community activities.
