abstract: This study seeks to answer three important questions in Jawdat Said's
thinking, namely, firstly the concept of nonviolence, secondly the development of
hermeneutics of nonviolence, thirdly the Qur'anic texts on nonviolence which are
interpreted aim to examine interpretations. According to Jawdat Said, the concept
of nonviolence is to fight violence, injustice and oppression not by physical
violence, whose main goal is peace. In developing non-violent hermeneutics, Said
uses several basic principles of interpretation, such as the principles of contextual,
rational and non-violent interpretation, the three basic principles in his
interpretation that make Said's interpretation in accordance with the need to answer
conflict issues related to Islam. Furthermore, the Qur'anic texts that form the basis
for Said's non-violence are Surah Al-Maidah verses 27-31, Al-Baqarah verse 256
and Surah Ar-Ra'd verse 11.
To find out the rationale and interpretation, this research uses a
hermeneutical approach using the theory of Jorge J.E. Gracia about interpretation.
With this approach, the structure of Said's thought in developing and interpreting
the Qur'anic texts would be uncovered. Said's interpretation is influenced by various
figures, situations and conditions so that this leads to a complex approach to the
Qur’an. In addition, the interpretation focuses more on the problem of humanism
or issues related to humanity. These things make Said's thinking different from that
of other contemporary scholars. In the principles used by Said also seem different
from others, he is able to separate the areas of the mind and soul, according to which
the audience is rarely aware of and highlighted these two aspects, even though both
are important things in shaping an action.
Furthermore, through this research, it is hoped that Muslims will be able to
get to know Jawdat Said, his works and thoughts, and make him a representation of
mufassir in responding to contemporary conflict issues. In addition, the public is
expected to know the focus of Said's study and to understand peaceful Islam through
his hermeneutics of non-violence.
