This can be ascertained because of the role of family communication in helping Covid-19 survivors deal with the stigma. This study aims to find out how the role of family communication in helping Covid-19 survivors face the stigma they receive. This research uses qualitative methods and symbolic interaction theory. Data collection was carried out by means of in-depth interviews with Covid-19 survivors, UIN Sunan Kalijaga students as volunteers for Merapi in 2020 using purposive sampling technique. Based on the results of the study, the role of family communication is shown through the attitude of openness, empathy, support, positive attitude, and equality in family communication that occurs in Covid-19 survivors. Through the openness provided, it helps Covid-19 survivors develop their minds in interpreting the stigma they receive. Meanwhile, the attitude of empathy, support, positive attitude and equality given in family communication helps Covid-19 survivors develop themselves. So it can be concluded that the openness given in family communication generates new thoughts for Covid-19 survivors in interpreting themselves and this plays a role in the process of taking roles for Covid-19 survivors which is useful for clarifying their feelings and developing the capacity to understand stigma. Empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude, and equality given in family communication produce the looking glass effect so that Covid-19 survivors can see themselves in the positive shadow of their family and produce a positive pygmalion effect. %Z Pembimbing: Dr. Yani Tri Wijayanti, S.Sos., M.Si.
