As one converts their religion, there must be a change or transformastion of their behavior, either partial or overall or no change at all, afterwards. For that reason, this study is trying to reveal the transformation of merchants’ tradition/behavior, in particular the Pontianak chinese merchants who have converted to Islam (mualaf). The transformation about to reveal is the relation between mualaf and their social economic environment. The study is also trying to uncover the influence of islamic convertion (kemualafan) over the merchants’ life. It is necessary to test why religion convertion can change the code of conduct. Hence, three proposed questions can represent the change of spirit of merchant chimese mualafs to live their life economically. This field research is a phenomenological type. The researcher observed in person the informan’s activities with regard to the transformation of chinese mualaf selling tradition in Pontianak. The researcher also carried out in-depth interview, observation, and documentation. The obtained data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenology method – trying to comprehend, interpret facts based on the data found in the field. The study proved that religion plays in three parts of chinese merchant mualafs: as motivation, ethics/norms, and soul pacifier. Religion convertion can transform their behavior as they take Prophet Muhammad’s figur their business model. The transformation, in another aspect, reinforces the legitimacy of the belief in the system of noble values of chinese trading tradition, such as hard-working, patient, never give up, economical, independent, honest, trusty, a way to reach success. A striking change before and after converting is their obedience to the concept of halal – of product and process – in Islam teaching. Besides, they accurately capitalize on two socialcapital they possess to be marketing strategy.
