This novel tells about how the polygamy in the novel is practiced by Rasheed with his wives, Mariam and Laila. Mariam is the woman who was hurt by Laila's appearance in her and Rasheed’s marriage. Mariam is always compared and oppressed by Rasheed. Meanwhile, Laila is a young and educated woman that benefits him. The researcher is interested to analyze the way polygamy is portrayed in the novel. The researcher also connects it to Islamic value because Rasheed and his two wives are Muslims and they live with Islamic law. It is essential to understand how polygamy is practiced in the novel. The researcher uses the theory of Polygamy by Mustafa Khan and supported by theory of gender equality by Ziba Mir Hosseini to analyze the data in the novel. The researcher uses qualitative method to examine the data. By this research, the researcher finds that Mariam’s polygamy that happened in the novel does not run well.
