"Changes in the national curriculum policy carried out by the government as a\r\nresult of the modernization of education require the pesantren (Islamic boarding\r\nschools) to maintain the uniqueness of their character on the one hand and also\r\nhave to adapt the curriculum in accordance with the policies on the other side.\r\nThis dilemmatic condition encourages pesantren to make a paradigm shift and\r\nreconstruction of Islamic education thinking, including one that has happened at\r\nPondok Pesantren Madrasah Wathoniyah Islamiyah (PPMWI) in Kebarongan of\r\nKemumjen of Banyumas by reconstructing the curriculum and at the same time\r\nthinking of Islamic education in accordance with government demands and the\r\nnecessity to preserve its distinctiveness, i.e., teaching the aqeedah which comes\r\nfrom the books of fathul majid and fiqh from the books of Fathul Qarib and Fiqh\r\nSunnah.\r\nThis study intended to reveal a shift in the thinking of intergenerational\r\nIslamic education at the PPMWI in 1950-2012. The purpose of this study was to\r\ndescribe the shifting thinking of Islamic education among generations, to map the\r\nparadigm of educational thinking of caregivers, to explore the dynamics of the\r\ncurriculum used in PPMWI, and to describe the efforts of the Kyai in maintaining\r\nthe existence of the pesantren. The main subjects in this study were the caregivers\r\nand chosen alumni from PPMWI. The data were analyzed using descriptive\r\nqualitative techniques that described input and data sources derived from\r\ninterviews, observation, and documentation. The theory of educational thinking\r\nparadigms (Giroux and Aronowitz), constructivism learning theory (Jean Piaget)\r\nand genealogy theory of power (Michel Foucault) were employed for the\r\ntheoretical framework.\r\nThis study found that the shift in the thinking of Islamic education among\r\ngenerations at the PPMWI in 1950 to 2012 occurred due to changes and\r\ndevelopments in the pesantren education system adapted to the prevailing national\r\neducation system. These changes and adjustments were the response of each\r\ngeneration that led PPMWI having an agency in reflecting on the existing national\r\neducation curriculum or system.\r\nThe text understanding of the PPMWI caregivers textually, preservation of\r\nprevious generation religious traditions with the prohibition of interpreting outside\r\nthe text, perceptions of moral education (character training) as one of the\r\nsignificant aspects of schooling, and preservation of patterns and old social\r\ntraditions were some indicators, referring to Giroux's theory and Aronowitz, that\r\nmaintained stability. These indicators showed that the educational thinking\r\nparadigm that influenced the PPMWI caregivers on Islamic education was the\r\nconservative education paradigm. While in terms of the theory of the paradigm of\r\nIslamic education, this indicator led to the religious-rational paradigm (al-Diniy\r\nal-‘Aqlany) which assumed that all science had to be able to deliver its owner to\r\nthe hereafter.\r\nEach generation of PPMWI produced a different curriculum discourse\r\ndepending on the caregiver education paradigm and intellectual genealogy that\r\nconditioned their response to the government policy. Production of curriculum\r\ndiscourse in each generation at the same time gave birth to the production of\r\npower, i.e., that the existence of a new (modified) curriculum had to be applied at\r\nPPMWI. Therefore, every time there was a change in the National curriculum, the\r\ndynamics of the education curriculum was implemented at the PPMWI. The\r\nchange in PPMWI's education curriculum took place in several phases: 1) the\r\nearly post-independence era which emphasized the pesantren curriculum and\r\nadded several general subjects in accordance with the national curriculum; 2)\r\nPPMWI education curriculum in New Order era; 3) PPMWI education curriculum\r\nin the era of reform; and 4) integrated curriculum known as the three in one\r\ncurriculum that combined the pesantren curricula which still maintained a\r\ncurriculum model applied at Madrassa Ibtidaiyyah (elementary schoold) and\r\nTsanawiyah (middle school) in Cairo of Egypt), and the Ministry of Religion\r\ncurriculum and the Ministry of National Education curriculum in one curriculum.\r\nChanges and adjustments to the curriculum were a form of curriculum\r\ncompromise by the caregivers of PPMWI (actors as owners of power) to new\r\ndiscourses in order to safeguard the characteristics of PPMWI included in the\r\nlocal content curriculum.\r\nThe preservation efforts of the existence of PPMWI Islamic boarding schools,\r\nespecially the Islamic tradition of pesantren, were carried out by the Kyai or\r\ncaregivers with the power of actors (caregivers) used as a determinant power in\r\ndetermining educational discourse in PPMWI. Two efforts made were, first, the\r\nrecruitment of educators by prioritizing the PPMWI alumni and those who had\r\ncompleted their learning in the Middle East, so that intellectual traditions could be\r\nmaintained, especially the purification of their monotheism and, second, the\r\nconstruction of intellectual networks with two network patterns, i.e., family and\r\nintellectual.\r\nContribution to knowledge: Shifting of the thinking of Islamic education in\r\npesantren is influenced by the paradigm of caregiver education and dominant\r\ndiscourse that develops in the world of education."^^ .
