"Islamic religious symbols used in television commercial\r\nadvertisements with Islamic figures as the models have risen\r\ncontradictive opinions as some argue that it is as a form of\r\nreligious commodification in Indonesia. Religious symbols\r\nused as a trade brand to earn market segmentation will likely\r\nresult in the mixing of trade and religion. This topic is\r\nexamined with the semiotics of Roland Barthes. Semiotics is\r\nused to analyze media texts assuming that the media are\r\ncommunicated through a set of signs. This study explains the\r\nshape and meaning of verbal symbols of Islamic religion, the\r\nrelationship among nonverbal symbols, the sacralization and\r\ndesacralization of religious symbols, and the significance of\r\nthe use of Islamic religious symbols in Indonesian TV\r\ncommercial advertisements. The data obtained from YouTube\r\nchannels are then transcribed orthographically. The results of\r\nthis study indicate that the meaning of verbal religious symbols\r\nof Islam in commercial television advertisements includes the\r\ninterpretation of religious verbal symbols in the form of\r\ngreetings, interjection, testimonial expressions, lexical forms,\r\nprayers, institution names, greetings, and expressions. These\r\nsymbols are used as brand reinforcement for a product. The\r\nrelationship among nonverbal symbols includes symbolic,\r\nparadigmatic, and syntagmatic relationships. The paradigmatic\r\nrelationship includes the upper part in the form of peci (a cap),\r\nhijab, and turban. The upper body clothes include koko, suit,\r\nand abaya, while the lower body clothes include sarong and\r\ntrousers. Islamic religious symbols experience sacralization\r\nand desacralization in commercial television advertisements.\r\nUstaz and ustazah as religious leaders can be categorized as\r\nparole or individual behavior. Television commercial ads have\r\na parallel dimension to various aspects of the nature and\r\nfunction of myth in traditional societies. These myths are\r\nstrung together in a dramatization in the ads. Dramatization is\r\npart of the creative execution of advertising. Dramatization ads\r\nemphasize the delivery of short stories that contain problems\r\nand problem solving. There are at least six reasons that Islamic\r\nreligious symbols are used in this kind of ads, i.e., the new\r\nauthority of religious leaders, the uniqueness of personal branding, religious symbols as spokesmen, new piety in the\r\nprofane world, rediscovering lost religious identities, and\r\nsymbiosis of mutualism."^^ .
