Character education focuses more on the knowledge and concepts of character. Meanwhile, character-based education explains how to develop character and focus more on creating character-based atmosphere in educational institutions which is still very limited. Though character education is urgent to be implemented. Related to the anxiety of the lack of methods in character development, MAN 1 Gunungkidul uses the Living Values Education (LVE) model as an approach in developing the character of the students. The purpose of this research to know: (1) LVE is chosen as an approach in character education in MAN 1 Gunungkidul, (2) implementation of character education through LVE approach, and (3) Impact of LVE approach towards character formation of the students. This research is a qualitative research with phenomenological approach. Interviews, observation, and documentation are used to collect the data. The data analysis is done by data reduction, data display and conclusion. The test validity test of data conducted by triangulation. The result of this study shows that the reason of MAN 1 Gunungkidul make LVE as character education approach is because LVE considered as an effort to improve the quality of character education, as a guide in educating students, and as an effort in forming young generation with supreme character, virtuous, intelligent, creative and having noble character. Through LVE, character education covers a range of value activities consisting of Value Identification, Activity, Learning Aids, Unit Interaction, Evaluation Segment. The values are based on the Madrasah Vision: Religious Values, Creative Values, Social Care Value and Self-Value. The implementation of the LVE affects the changes that occur to the teacher, the teacher who eventually feels a great responsibility and feels that teaching is not only a matter of delivering material, but also attempting to living values or characters.
