"This article aims at examining the\r\ncontestation of identity of the Islamic youth movement,\r\nrepresented by the Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU) youths, in\r\nthe midst of radical and extremist Islamic movements\r\nin Yogyakarta. The NU’s youth movements which are\r\nmostly associated with peaceful faces of Islam have\r\ndirectly been facing the puritan and extremist Islamic\r\nmovement communities spreading out massively in\r\nmany elements of societal environment. The radical\r\nIslamist and extremist movements supported by\r\ntransnational-affiliated Islamic movements such as\r\nWahabism and Hizbut Tahrir as well have taken apart\r\nin the contestation of identity in public space to gain\r\nsocial and political attention. In practice, these groups\r\nhave eroded and at the same time threatened tolerant\r\nvalues in Yogyakarta, such as the latest fact about\r\nremoval of cross from grave in some areas of the city.\r\nThe movement of NU’s youths, however, is awfully\r\nrequired to minimize and even deny the means of\r\nradical and extremist Islam campaigns which are\r\nheralded by radical groups in general. This article will\r\nmap out the forms of contestation of the identity of\r\nNU’s youths and the main activities they have been\r\ndone to intervene the public sphere in order to\r\nmaintain tolerant values and diversity of Indonesia as\r\na pluralistic country both ethnically and religiously. A\r\nqualitative approach is used for this research with an\r\nopen-ended interview as a collective data technique.\r\nThe findings have implications for tolerant-affiliated\r\nyouth movements and those who advocate for, work\r\nwith, and support them to always campaign peaceful\r\nfaces of Islam, tolerance, and harmony within\r\nIndonesian society."^^ .
