"This dissertation studies the relationship between Indonesian\r\nMuslim and Catholic of Manggarai, Flores East Nusa Tenggara post\r\nreform period (2000-2019). The three primary research questions\r\nare: 1) What Muslim-Catholic dynamics occurred in Manggarai\r\nbefore and after reform? 2) Why was there a post reform change of\r\nMuslim-Catholic relationship dynamics? 3) What preventive actions\r\nwere there to minimize the tension and conflict? The objectives of\r\nthe study are: 1) to uncover post reform dynamic of Muslim and\r\nCatholic relationship of Manggarai; 2) to discover the reasons behind\r\nthe change of the dynamics; 3) to analyze the way to prevent and\r\nminimize the high tension and conflict. It is a case study that employs\r\nhistorical and sociological approach. Data were collected through\r\nhistory literature study and field research (observation and interview)\r\nbefore being analyzed using qualitative descriptive method.\r\nThe research resulted some points. 1) There was a different\r\npattern of Muslim and Catholic relationship before and after reform.\r\nDuring new order era, it was inter-subjective (subject-subject)\r\npattern, while indifferent and functional (subject-object) one was\r\ndominant after reform era. 2) The change of Muslim and Catholic\r\nsociety dynamics was due to the agglomerating inter-dominated\r\nfeelings between the two religion communities in which four factors\r\ntriggered: first, the tendency of each religious organization to present\r\nreligious exclusivism to each community; second, the unparalleled\r\nreligious education infrastructure with the condition of religion\r\nteachers; third, the people’s choice on exclusive religious content in\r\nsocial media with no critical thoughts; fourth, local political contests.\r\n3) The efforts to prevent and minimize the high tension dynamics\r\nwere channeled through the existing social and cultural assets and\r\nmedia both government and civil structures, such as religious figures,\r\npublic figures, custom figures, and young interfaith figures.\r\nThus, the inter-dominated feeling was placed as the post\r\nreform dynamic root of indifferent which was eventually fragile from tension and conflict. This, therefore, completes earlier studies on the\r\nreasons behind the high tension and conflict in the Muslim-Catholic\r\nrelationship in Indonesia. Mujiburrahman said that the cause of\r\ntension and conflict between Muslim and Christian is threatened\r\nfeeling, while Fatimah Husein mentioned exclusive and inclusive\r\nreligious points of view are the dominant roots whether Indonesian\r\nMuslim and Christian relationship is harmonious or not. Ahmad\r\nMuttaqin discovered that the effect of media construct against\r\nChristianization and Islamization issues triggered the conflict, while\r\nZuly Qodir and B. Singh mentioned religion convert and ‘Merry\r\nChristmas’ greeting did.\r\nIn this study, the dynamics of Muslim and Catholic\r\nrelationship colored by inter-dominated feeling was prevented and\r\nminimized by a mindset that the researcher calls it ‘interaccommodation’.\r\nPrevious scholar (Ayelet Shachar) proposed the\r\nterm transformative accommodation to manage diversity problems\r\noccurred in every country. In this context of Muslim-Catholic\r\nrelation dynamics in Manggarai, however, the researcher thought the\r\nterm inter-accommodation was more appropriate. The term is used\r\nto emphasize the presence of the need to be open, to invite and attend,\r\nparticipate, and understand each other so that a religious community\r\nsenses the feeling of being part of another religious community. In\r\naddition, inter-accommodation mindset is needed in public\r\ncelebrations to strengthen the values of unity in diversity with which\r\nno single religion community feels abandoned nor secluded.
